托福综合口语中关于“过时”的表达

在TPO2的综合口语Task3中有这样一段对话：

Man:I don't like the university's plan.

Woman:Really? I've ridden those buses, and sometimes there were only a few people on the bus. It did seem like kind of a waste.

Man:I see your point. But I think the problem is the route is out-of-date.

其中，“Route” 和“Out-of-date” 都可能对大家造成理解障碍。Route意为路线，读作[ru:t]。Route一词的发音其实和Root一样，大家更熟悉的是后者。而Out-of-date意为过时的。

Outdated (adj.)

Outdated (adj.) 在柯林斯中被这样解释：

No longer current or popular;

其实我们只需要记它的一个意思——“过时”。

【例】It's only an outdated classic in which nobody's much interested,' said Mr. Jackson.

【译】那只是个没人在乎的过时经典罢了，Jackson先生说道。

Outdated和Out-of-date的意思相同，因为Out这个前缀本身就是“过时”的意思，而Out-of-date和outdated的区别在于，在口语中前者的普遍用法是Sth is out-of-date，而很少将它放在名词前。

此外，Outdated的近义词还有Outmoded，Old-fashioned，但这二者都不常在口语中使用。

Anachronistic (adj.)

柯林斯给出的解释也是非常通俗易懂：

You say that something is anachronistic when you think that it is out of date or old-fashioned.

总结后还是一个词：过时的。

但只知道它有过时的意思还不够，它在GRE中的考法还有“时代错误”(Chronological misplacing)，即时间上的矛盾对立，就比如电视剧中的“穿越”。

这个词也算是备考GRE必会的一个单词，比如我们可以看看下面这个例句：

【例】In an increasingly secular society the religious aspects of monarchy may seem anachronistic.

【译】君主制在逐渐世俗化的社会中显得不合时宜。
