Agreepersonal texts or emails are distracting

The white Orca seen near the Russian iceberg and the one found in Alaska are two different whales.

1. Difference in colors

2. Long distance separating the sites where they were observed

3. Scientists have calculated the age of one orca by measuring the size of its fin. Their findings reveal that in 2000, the fin of the orca indicated it was 20 years old. However, another measurement of the fin in 2010 suggests that the whale was still 20 years old instead of 30. Thereby they must be two different whales.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?

All university students should take basic science courses regardless of their fields of study.

Science is the very foundation and pillar for modern society. Inadequate knowledge of basic science is almost tantamount adj.等同于)to illiteracy amid todays fierce academic competition, thereby justifying the request for all university students to participate in basic science courses.

Taking science courses fosters v.培养) and hones v.磨砺) essential thinking skills that benefits students of all disciplines n. Logical thinking, critical thinking, analytical and deductive reasoning skills are derived from science courses.

Respectable personal qualities n.品格) are cultivated through learning science, to name a few —— curiosity, skepticism n.怀疑精神), the pursuit of scientific truth (追求科学真理), rigorous (adj.严密的) and meticulous adj.

Despite all the indisputable benefits of basic science courses, it is arbitrary (adj.武断的) and unreasonable to mandate university students to engage in such courses without taking their majors into account. The most compelling counter-argument of the presented view could be found in almost every university, where the faculty n.高校的院系) is divided into different departments corresponding to various fields of study, among which there are Natural Science Department n.自然科学) and Department of Humanities n. While a student majoring in physics or chemistry would undoubtedly benefit immensely from learning basic science, it is difficult to imagine why a student of music or literature would find such courses particularly illuminating or serve any practical purpose.

1discipline  n.学科

2mandatory  adj.

3academic competition  phrase.

4fosters (v.培养) and hones (v.磨砺) essential thinking skills

5participate/engage in…  v.参与
