Some people think the money spent developing technology for space is not justified. There are more beneficial ways to spend this money. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
A. 没有任何方面比投资太空技术发展更有利(这种观点是支持发展太空技术);
B. 发展太空技术完全没有意义,应该把钱投入到其他方面(这种观点否定发展太空技术);
Ever since the first landing on the Moon about half a century ago, the human’s interest in and exploration of the outer space have never stopped. However, space exploration so far has not brought us the expected benefits, which makes many people doubt whether it is worthwhile for the government to spend that vast amount of money developing space technology.
(2) outer space 外太空
(3) worthwhile 值得的
(4) vast amount of money
02
Still, there are many people who are very enthusiastic about space exploration. They are interested in how different beings on other planetssurvive and believe their more advanced technology may well help us human beings solve our existing problems. Besides, as many scientists havespeculated, the Earth will eventually die and disappear into the black hole. We therefore need to find other planets suitable for living so that when that day does come, our future grand, grand children will not perish with the Earth.
(2) be enthusiastic about...
(3) survive 生存
(4) speculate 猜想
(5) eventually 最终
(6) perish
03
Those with more realistic bend of mind, however, do not support the idea of spending that much money developing space technology. They are generally concerned about the safety and usefulness of space exploration to us human beings, thinking that the space exploration enabled by space technology will make the outer space polluted and more dangerous. Others would believe it is just a huge waste of money to try to reach the outer space, especially when there are so many practical problems on this planet crying for solution. The money squandered on developing technology to find other life forms, for instance, should be used to help children who cannot afford to go to college and those who cannot enjoy decent medical services.
(2) those with realistic bend of mind
(3) practical 实际的
(4) cry for solution
(5) squander 浪费
(6) decent 体面的
04
Personally, I do think that there should be a balance between the money spent on the immediate issues and the future ones. Undoubtedly, such pressing problems as housing, education, and medicare ought to be taken care of by the government, but it is also the responsibility of the government to prepare for the future of the Earth. Seen in this light, areasonable investment on space technology is perfectly justifiable.
(2) balance 平衡
(3) pressing
(4) in this light
(5) reasonable 合理的
(6) justifiable
